Dear Members of Sigma Phi Omega,
Happy New Year!
As we welcome the New Year, we do so at a meaningful moment in our history. This past year
marked the 45th anniversary of Sigma Phi Omega—forty-five years of advancing scholarship,
professional excellence, and leadership in gerontology and aging.
Our Society has always been more than an honor society. It is a community of students,
professionals, and chapter leaders committed to understanding aging in all its complexity and
improving the lives of older adults and their communities. That mission remains as vital today as
ever—yet the world in which we carry it forward is changing.
As we look ahead, we continue to engage in thoughtful conversation about what a
renewed “SPO 2.0” can become: an evolution that honors our legacy while responding to the
realities of our time. This means strengthening the bridge between students and professionals,
elevating the voices and impact of our local chapters, and ensuring that Sigma Phi Omega
remains a relevant, inclusive, and forward-looking leader in gerontology.
In the year ahead, I invite you to actively shape this next chapter:
- Answer the call to leadership.
Nominations are now open for our next slate of Board members. Your participation helps ensure
our Society reflects the depth, diversity, and excellence of our field.
Submit a nomination by February 28, 2026 at https://sigmaphiomega.org/about-us/board-nominations/
- Help grow our community.
Please encourage eligible students, colleagues, and professionals to join Sigma Phi Omega and
support our mission.

- Be part of our 45th anniversary and “SPO 2.0” initiative.
We are launching a member and chapter design contest to create commemorative artwork and
a logo that celebrates our 45th year and symbolizes the future of Sigma Phi Omega. We invite
students, professionals, and chapters to share their creativity and vision. This design will be featured on a future t-shirt.
Be creative and email your design to spogerontologymembership@gmail.com or ask any questions you may have.
