Tara Mastro is an educator in gerontology and the biological sciences whose work centers on mechanisms of aging, student mentorship, and workforce readiness. She earned her PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Southern California and her BS in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Riverside. She also completed postdoctoral training in biochemistry and neurobiology at the California Institute of Technology.

At the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, Dr. Mastro teaches courses in the physiology and neurobiology of aging, research methods, biodemography, and scientific communication. Much of her teaching focuses on helping students connect classroom learning to real-world questions in aging, health, and care. She directs the USC Leonard Davis Undergraduate Honors Program, where she supports students in preparing for graduate and professional training, and contributes to national gerontology education efforts through GSA/AGHE workgroups focused on educator resources and program development.

Dr. Mastro’s work is grounded in a commitment to student success, workforce readiness, and community engagement. Outside the classroom, she serves as a Senior Commissioner for the City of Pasadena, contributing to local efforts that support older adults, senior services, and community well-being. As Member-at-Large for Sigma Phi Omega, she looks forward to supporting students, faculty, and professionals who are building community and advancing scholarship, leadership, and service in aging.
